Information Technology and Information Systems can be considered two sides of the same coin. However, most of the time, Information Technology falls under Information Systems as it is a more inclusive term of the technological features a company has access to. The reason behind classifying Information Systems as the umbrella under which everything falls is its usage to handle, create, store, share, and analyze information on people and processes available at hand.
One of the simplest examples of an information system is the management information system, which assists managers in analyzing their employees and company’s performance to improve it, create reports, and make informed decisions based on its output. The value of the information we get out of data analytics is crucial, and every piece of it has to go through an information system to be processed into useful knowledge.
Once this information is fed into decision support systems, another form of information systems, it allows managers to clearly dissect the data it includes to take the actions necessary in the direction needed. These systems use databases and commercial decision support to prepare business packages such as forecasting, linear programming, and decision trees.
Information Technology typically includes hardware, software, databases, and networks. Information technology often governs the acquisition, processing, storage, and dissemination of digitized information, or data, generated through the disciplines of computing and telecommunications. Information technology focuses on managing technology and improving its utilization to advance the overall business goals.
The difference between information systems and information technology is that information system incorporates the technology, people, and processes involved with information. Information technology is the design and implementation of information, or data, within the information system.
